Wednesday was the 30th anniversary of the 1980 murder of John Lennon. You know how people say they remember where they were and what they were doing when JFK was shot, well I remember exactly when I heard that Lennon had been shot. I came home from school to find my father sad and very quiet. I asked him what was wrong, and he said that John Lennon had been killed.
I was 10 years old, and the Beatles, along with the Stones, Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and a few others formed my musical horizons. I had yet to hear of Johnny Cash, Black Sabbath, Leonard Cohen, Howlin Wolf, or any of the other bands that would be added to my immortal pantheon ten years later. Funny, add a bunch of Social D, some Danzig, a little Tom Waits, maybe Roy Buchanan, and some Hank III, and not much has changed music wise for me since I was ten.
What causes someone to murder someone who they do not know and have never had any interaction with? I have no idea, but it seems to happen disturbingly often. What a damn shame. I don’t really have a point with this post, and I know I am rambling a bit. Maybe my point is just that it is really nice to be part of this community, and the larger community that is CrossFit. I go to work in the morning knowing that I am going to be happy to see each and every person that walks in the door (even Cliff). I can (and have) visit a box just about anywhere and be made welcome. And that is pretty cool. So thanks folks.
Maybe I just feel a little maudlin on this sad day. But hey, tomorrow is another day. In the meantime, I am going to put on some music. I think Revolver.
