The American Weightlifting Open was a blast this weekend. Out in Cincinnati Ohio over 300 Olympic Lifting Athletes, who qualified in USAW sanctioned meets throughout the year, gathered to compete for the 2010 title. There was no shortage of strength, precision, and athleticism- something that all CrossFitters, if ever the chance, should come check out.
Above is some footage of Saturday nights session which combined the best of the Men’s 94kg and 85kg weight classes. It was probably one of the most exciting athletic events I’ve seen in person. Not only was this session filled with talent, but two new American Records were broken- one by School Age competitor Ian Wilson just 16 years old with a 182kg C&J and the other by Jr. Jared Flemming just 19 years old with a 190kg C&J (you do the math- multiply kg by 2.2 to get the lbs and see for yourself!). Jon North took 2nd overall who is also a very entertaining lifter. There’s something about those big lifts that is so inspirational, and in tern motivating for one’s own training.
CrossFit is so much fun because it draws from a variety of sports, a huge one being Olympic Weightlifting, and also includes gymnastics, track type events, endurance/cross country, rowing, just to name a few. If you ever get the chance to see, or better yet compete, in any of these amazing sports I encourage you to do it. In my opinion, only then can you truly appreciate them and CrossFit’s use of them in your fitness and GPP training.
