In February, Pauly Silva–a local martial arts teacher, a strong source of inspiration for many, and a man both passionate and giving–was senselessly gunned down in a case of mistaken identity. I wrote about Pauly and his passing here (please read). He left behind a shocked community and, more importantly, two young daughters. This Saturday, Kaijin MMA martial arts school will hold a benefit tournament in memory of Pauly. All proceeds will go to his daughters. The tournament will feature boxing, kickboxing, and Brazilian jujutsu matches, as well as a deadlift contest. Santa Cruz as a community has experienced more than its fair share of sorrow and shock at the hands of needless violence in the early few months of 2013. This tournament is a small way to help bring the community together in a constructive fashion and provide a positive venue to remember a dearly missed friend, father, and teacher. Please come out and support the fighters and Pauly’s memory and daughters.
CrossFit West Santa Cruz is one of the sponsors and two of CF West’s members, Dom and Michael, will be reaching deep into their CrossFit training when they step foot into the boxing ring. It takes an incredible amount of courage to lace up gloves and step into that squared circle, but the resulting benefits go very deep. Please join me for a fun afternoon of great fights, great community, great athleticism, a great cause and a great time at Kaijin MMA on the corner of Swift and Delaware streets on the westside. Fights start at 12:30. And don’t forget to try your strength, and luck, at the deadlift contest.
I hope to see you there.
