Kyle and Molly, working the boxer’s favorite, the ol’ med ball situp.
At CFWSC we took advantage of some late afternoon sun to take a class up to UCSC in order to workout outdoors. You know, sometimes you just have to get out of the box. Mix up your training. Santa Cruz offers myriad opportunities for a great outdoor workout.
Grab a kettlebell or two and a med ball and hit the beach. Take advantage of your surroundings. Instead of just doing swings, do 100m throwing the bell as far as you can over your head. Two hands, one hand, shot put it. Sprint to the bell. Monkey jump to it. Komodo crawl to it. You will be having so much fun that you won’t even notice all the strange looks you will be getting.
School tracks are another great outdoor training venue. Especially if there are pullup bars. Some schools, such as Soquel High, even have dip bars and hurtles. UCSC is probably our favorite. Somehow, I almost like Helen when she pays a visit there. The volleyball sand pit and the surrounding small hills offer lots of brutal sprints and the view is the best in town. Not that you will notice it when you are flat on your back afterwards.
So get out of the box. Use your imagination. Use your surroundings.
