I like to see meaning in things, both tangible and abstract. Meaning inspires me. But I never thought to see the meaning in the actual word ‘inspire’ until today. It is both illuminating and inspirational. Think about what happens to you when you are inspired. It could be by an action, a thought, a work of art, a natural happening, anything really. You take a breath, maybe in wonder, your chest fills up, your shoulders rise. It is the exact opposite of being deflated, defeated, chest caved, shoulders slumped. And that is what the word means, ‘to fill up, to breath in.’ When you are inspired, you are filled with purpose, with idea. And so inspire also means to ‘influence or animate with purpose.’

I found it an interesting coincidence that I find some of the greatest inspiration accompanied by a marked importance on breath. It is in this very same place that I see people go far beyond what they thought themselves capable. Where I see people fill with something that pushes them forward into what for them is another realm. Ah, but that is another meaning of inspire. To be illuminated with something beyond yourself, to inflame, from the Latin inspirare.

It is easy to be inspired by the dramatic and the great. Champions, kings, prophets, masters, the famous and the beautiful. Of course I am inspired by Bernini, Cohen, Musashi, and others. How can you not be? But it is the beauty and the greatness of the everyday and the ordinary that give me, while perhaps less rapture, more determination and persistance. More inspiration for my own life and endeavor.

And where else better to be surrounded by this inspiration, in all it’s meanings, than a CrossFit gym.

A big Happy Birthday to Kaitie K. We love you Kaitie!
