On a scale from 1 to the Mississippi River, how important is hydration?
Ocean. My answer is ocean.
First off, our bodies are comprised of mostly water (Salt water to be specific. Next time you have a pal who states that they’re afraid of the sea, be sure to remind them that they are made up of about 70% salt water.) Having a good balance between water and electrolytes determines how most of the major systems of the human body function. And since you’re a well-polished Mercedes-Benz, you best be fueling up with that high end diesel!
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! WATER is what makes you sexy!
-Moves waste out of the body through urination and defecation (Thank your kidneys and liver, and spare them the alcohol.)
-Regulates body temperature through sweating
-Keeps tissue, joints, and spinal cord lubricated and protected
-Transports nutrients and oxygen to organs and then to cells (The immune system functions best when your muscles and organs are in tip top shape. What’s flu season?)
-Dissolves minerals to make them accessible to the body
-Energizes muscles (Don’t allow your cells to shrivel up like raisins. Muscle fatigue=no PR’s fo you.)
-Helps keep skin looking good
-Produces seratonin (neurotransmitter that controls sleep, mood, sexual desire, and behavior) and melatonin (hormone that controls sleep and wake cycles) in the brain
-Keeps eyes moist and mouth clean
So now that it’s just about beach season, and everyone is sporting the bod they have earned, here are some ways to keep yourself hydrated and lookin fly as you hit on AJ, I MEAN…that lifeguard at the pool without getting heat stroke:
Keep a water bottle with you at all times! Water bottles are just as diverse as personalities nowadays. If you’re super hip, drink out of a mason jar. If you can only drink liquids through a straw, well I’ll be darned! Get yourself a fancy tumbler.
Down a HUGE cup of water right when you wake up. You can use the restroom first of course…but seriously right after that! If you’re getting a full 8-10 hours of sleep, that’s 8-10 hours with no consumption of anything! The first thing your body wants is water. So drink up buttercup!
Eat fruits and veggies throughout the day. This is too easy since there is an ample selection of produce here in Santa Cruz.
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Thirst and a dry mouth are symptoms of mild dehydration.
Drink water throughout the day. I suggest drinking a cup before and after every meal.
Face the facts…
You’re going to have to make frequent trips to the restroom. Fortunately you are not in school where you have to ask the teacher to use the facilities…you are an adult and when you gotta go, ya gotta go! You will be bombarded with not only friends and family, but strangers too asking how you got such lovely skin. A healthy gut is a healthy butt. You are basically wearing liquid body armour when you are hydrated. Now go drink a cup of water right this instant.
