From what I understand, one of the greatest attractions of endurance sports is that one is able to enter a zone of thoughtlessness or mindlessness. As the miles pile atop the miles, the only way to keep going is to shut out the mind and become a machine, an automaton. And so the mind is able to drift.
Herein lies the one of the key differences between endurance training and CrossFit training. The very immediacy, the very imminence, of CrossFit training demands total mindfulness. In stark contrast to the drifting thoughts of the endurance event, CrossFit needs complete attention. The movements are too sudden, too violent, too dangerous, for anything less.
Total mindfulness is one of the hallmarks of CrossFit, just as mindlessness is one of endurance training. The more in the moment you are, the safer, stronger, and more effective your movement will be.
