Mind’s Eye

Johnny V tackles the Chief.

The mind’s eye is a tricky thing.

For example, when I was visiting the Bronze Age citadel and fortress of Mycenae in Greece, I had no problem seeing, in my mind’s eye, what it once looked like. The same thing for fabled Troy in Turkey. I could easily envision the sweep of armies as they clashed on the broad plain below me. I could readily see the staggering walls that once encircled both places.

But, I have the hardest time imagining what my hometown of Santa Cruz looked like 200 years ago. I just can’t see it for what it once was, the San Lorenzo in its former path, the air teeming with birds. I am simply too familiar with it.

When people come into the gym and they try CrossFit for the first time, like me with Santa Cruz, they cannot envision the changes that regular CrossFit training will bring to their bodies. But I can. I can look at these people and see what 6 months, a year, 2 years, of CrossFit will do to them. Just as with Mycenae, I am far enough removed from the subject to see the future as I did the past. The people in question, on the other hand, are far too close to see it, after all, we are talking about themselves, and they rarely believe me when I mention the change in their future.

But all that changes so soon.

How have you changed since starting CrossFit? Please post to Comments.

A big Happy Birthday to CrossFit West Santa Cruz’s sharpshooter Alvin I.
