The Difference

I have a friend who is a good mixed martial artist.  He has ideas about doing some fights, and he is certainly good enough, but for a myriad of reasons he just can’t get it together to really train.

To a coach, one of the most frustrating things in the whole wide world is a person with a lot of ability and potential who doesn’t make use of it.  A week or so ago, my friend and I were talking and he again mentioned about doing a fight soon.  I looked at him and I finally told him that I have heard the same thing from him for a good two years now.  I then asked him what he thought he would be like today if he had been training hard for the past two years, when I first heard him mention fighting in the ring.  He just nodded his head slowly.

The flip side to my friend is the person who thinks they need to get into shape before doing CrossFit.  My answer to this is that you can never get into CrossFit shape doing anything but CrossFit.  It just doesn’t happen. Why waste the time.

No really, think about it.  You only have so much time, we all do.  Why waste it?  I am not saying that doing anything except CrossFit is a waste of time, of course not.  I am saying that if your goal is to do CrossFit, then do it.  If your goal is to fight mma style, then do it.  If you put it off a year, or even 6 months, then you have that much less time to make it happen.

Once you start training, really training, it is utterly amazing what a difference a year can make.
