A couple of days ago a theft of such proportion that it deserves to be called a heist was pulled off in Connecticut. The daring heist took place at night during a raging storm on daylight savings when there would be an extra hour of darkness. The thieves scaled a perimeter wall, broke into a warehouse by cutting a hole in the roof, rappelling in and turning off the alarm. They then loaded 70 pallets of loot into a semi trailer and made off with an estimated $75 million dollars worth of stolen goods. Wow. And who knows what the street value of that 75 mil might be. But, here’s the really interesting part. What was stolen was pharmaceutical anti depressant drugs such as Prozac and Cymbalta. Seventy five million dollars worth! I can’t wait to see the movie.
The whole thing was obviously a well planned caper and, according to the FBI, there probably is a buyer already lined up. This much stuff is not just peddled away by guys on street corners, but rather sold in bulk online or overseas. Above and beyond the Hollywoodesque story, what struck me was the sad fact that anti depressants are in such demand that a buyer(s) is so readily available. What is happening here? Are we really that depressed as a society and culture?
Enter CrossFit. Exercise produces natural neuro-chemicals that act as anti-depressants. Two such neurohormones are dopamine and serotonin. Among many uses, dopamine release is closely associated with the body’s pleasure system. Cocaine and amphetamine type drugs stimulate dopamine production in the brain. So does exercise, which is a lot healthier, legal, and, very important these days, cheaper. Serotonin functions differently, but with a similar effect. Pleasure drugs such as ecstasy cause serotonin production. As a very interesting aside (at least to a CrossFitter) low serotonin levels can be caused by high insulin levels and obesity, which is another plus for the Paleo diet. Both neuro-chemicals also have a large affect on the libido and sexual activity.
Hmm, I sense a new t-shirt slogan. CrossFit West Santa Cruz–be fitter, stronger, happier, live longer, and have more sex–without Prozac.
