The CrossFit West Summer Sports Series continues on August 20th with the boxing seminar.
Boxing is possibly the oldest contested sport, with Sumerian wall reliefs over five thousand years old depicting bouts. Homer writes circa the 9th century BC of great boxers and boxing matches in both the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Greeks included boxing in the Olympics in the early 7th century and padded gloves seem to have debuted on Minoan Crete in the latter half of the 2nd millennium BC.
Boxing has a long and illustrious modern history as well. The heavyweight champion of the world was, for much of the 20th century, considered the world’s greatest champion and sportsman, and boxing was one of the most popular sports. A Time magazine study from the 80s found Muhammad Ali, second only to Elvis, as the most recognized person in the world.
Boxers are some of the most powerful, conditioned, agile, coordinated, and fast athletes there are. As such, it is a perfect pairing with CrossFit and many of CrossFit’s earliest adherents were combat sports athletes, including boxers.
The CF West Summer Sports Series boxing seminar will be held at Kaijin Mixed Martials school (run by Garth Taylor, who, along with our own Jason Highbarger, is one of the very first CrossFitters) and taught by Dion Edge, a former Golden Gloves and Army champ. The seminar will include the basics of boxing–stance and footwork, punches, defensive techniques, bag work, and the rudiments of sparring. The seminar will conclude with completely optional sparring (Danny apparently is taking on all comers).
All equipment–gloves, headgear, and punching pads and bags–is provided by Kaijin. An optional mouthpiece can be purchased at any sporting goods store or CVS for a couple bucks. The same mouthpiece can be used in CrossFit training as well and will dramatically increase your wind.
The other events in the Summer Sports Series have been huge successes and really fun. Don’t miss this one. There is a sign up sheet on the front counter.
